Rob Mathews – The Son
Rob Mathews, a Naval patrol aircraft operator, knows what it’s like to fight in a war. His mother, Terry Hazuda, taught him the value of making the fight worthwhile and the value of spending life surrounded by family when she was up against her own war – breast cancer.
Terry was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago. Four years prior to her diagnosis, she traveled to Washington to welcome Rob home from a seven month Iraq deployment that he completed with the Navy. Rob says that Terry has never missed an opportunity to support him. Rob is one of our country’s heroes, but he says his mother is his own hero.
“I love you, mom, and for all the times that you have said the same to me, I want to tell you that today and always, I am proud of you!” Rob said.
Rob would describe his mother as caring and generous, because she always takes care of people no matter what. Terry used to keep him home from school on his birthday to go to the Texas Rangers’ opening game of the season. Because of the special time he spent with his mom, Rob says he understands the importance of spending quality time with his family and looks forward to traveling to Disneyland, creating memories with his children and their grandparents.
Rob and his mom are both heroes in their own right. Together they have joined Komen North Texas in the fight against breast cancer. You can join the fight with them at the Plano Race for the Cure on June 11th. Click here to register.
